1. Get to know the Non-Profit Standard Mail regulations. Section 703.1.0 of the Domestic Mail Manual (DMM) provides all non-profit mailing rules and regulations. The DMM is online at http://pe.usps.com.

2. Know the USPS definition of Non-profits.

-The post office declares organizations “may be authorized to mail at the Nonprofit Standard Mail rates if it is not organized for profit and none of its net income inures to the benefit of any private stockholder or individual.”  –DMM 703.1.2.1

3. Hand signed letters are considered personal correspondence and will be mailed at the 1st class postage rates.

4. The minimum amount for Non-Profit mailings is 200 pieces.

5. Do not lend your Non-Profit status to other organizations; however, third-party paid advertisements may be included in material mailed at the Non-profit Standard rates if the products or services advertised are substantially related to one or more of the purposes of original organization. –Advertising Restrictions: DMM703.1.6.6.b.2

6. A return address must be on all non-profit mail pieces, it is smart to have multiple return addresses on file. (Postal Form 3624)

7. Non-Profit periodical style publication allows advertisers to defray mailing costs, mail more often and to a wider audience, and increased visibility for your sponsors/advertisers.

8. Travel arrangement advertisements must not contain transportation specifics, destinations, or accommodations to receive non-profit status.

9. Consider hosting a fund raising event with other non-profits in your area. This offers a great way to share the costs of direct mail and event costs, and to draw people from a wider base.
